PRESS RELEASE

Improving the accessibility of euro area statistics

6 December 2005

Joint dissemination of euro area statistics and national contributions on the websites of the ECB and Eurosystem NCBs

Today the European Central Bank (ECB) and the national central banks (NCBs) of the euro area are, for the first time, releasing joint tables of euro area statistics and their national breakdowns on their websites.

An important task of the ECB is to compile and publish, in close cooperation with the NCBs of the euro area, financial and monetary statistics for the euro area. In order to respond to increasing demand from the users of these statistics, including analysts, market participants, journalists and researchers, the ECB, together with the NCBs, have developed a framework for improving the accessibility of national contributions to euro area statistics.

The central feature of the new framework is that euro area aggregates and all national contributions are presented in a single set of consistent tables that is published simultaneously on the ECB’s website and on the websites of the participating NCBs. These NCBs have integrated this innovative technology into their own website and will present the data and related information in their own layouts and languages, thus increasing the user-friendliness of the presentation of these statistics on their websites.

In order to access these tables on the websites of the ECB and Eurosystem NCBs, please visit http://www.ecb.europa.eu/stats/services/escb/html/index.en.html

This enhanced dissemination will allow the Eurosystem (the ECB and NCBs participating in the euro area) to communicate its statistics more effectively to the media and the citizens of Europe and to promote the Eurosystem as a network of institutions that closely work together. It is envisaged that over time this framework will incorporate more data series.
