The international role of the euro
Once a year the ECB publishes a report presenting an overview of developments in the use of the euro by non-euro area residents. Shifts in the global geopolitical landscape underscore the importance of strengthening the foundations needed for the euro to thrive internationally. There is an opening for the euro to enhance its global appeal – provided that European policymakers create the necessary conditions and put words into action.

The international role of the euro grew moderately in 2025. At the same time, there is no room for complacency, as fragmentation is growing in the international monetary system.
